more »"A Woman's War: Vietnam" seeks to tell the stories of the women who have served in Vietnam's wars of the twentieth century, to examine how their lives were changed by combat, and how being a women has influenced the way they coped with conflict. These women joined the army at a very young age, often wearing the title of soldier before that of adult. They have carefully carried their stories throughout their lives, often not sharing them, rather spending their days working on farms, in government offices, and as homemakers, helping Vietnamese society gradually build beyond decades of conflict. But their stories remain within them - experiences that shaped their lives permanently.
These six histories form the first part of what I hope will become a larger series entitled "Women Warriors" that examines the role that women have played in recent conflicts and the lasting effects that war has had on these women and their loved ones. In learning the stories of these women, and understanding how conflict has shaped them as mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives, "Women Warriors" endeavors to document the ways in which conflict not only affects those who experience it firsthand, but also those that they nurture and raise - the next generation.
